Dependent Origination (प्रतीत्यसमुत्पाद pratītyasamutpāda)
Pratītyasamutpāda –
A name given by the historical Buddha to the arising of samsaric phenomena, variously rendered into English as “dependent origination”, “conditional genesis”, “dependent co-arising”, “inter dependent arising”.

“Commonly translated as dependent origination, or dependent arising, is a key principle in Buddhist teachings, which states that all dharmas (“phenomena”) arise in dependence upon other dharmas: “if this exists, that exists; if this ceases to exist, that also ceases to exist”.

The principle is expressed in the links of dependent origination (Pali: dvādasanidānāni, Sanskrit: dvādaśanidānāni) in Buddhism, a linear list of twelve elements from the Buddhist teachings which arise depending on the preceding link. Traditionally the list is interpreted as describing the conditional arising of rebirth in saṃsāra, and the resultant duḥkha (suffering, pain, unsatisfactoriness). ” (from wikipedia)

The Garland of Views
“In A Garland of Views, Padmasambhava compares the different vehicles on the basis of three criteria–view, meditation, and result. He devotes the final section of the text to a comparison using a fourth criterion–spiritual training and yogic discipline or conduct. Of all these, the view is of paramount importance. The way we look at the world decides the path we will take, whether spiritual or otherwise. When we see things erroneously, we create our own (and others’) suffering, and if we are to change our condition, we need to make radical changes to our view of reality. Once the view has been established, we can meditate on it, training our minds by means of spiritual practice and tuning our activities through appropriate conduct, until we finally achieve the result. The particular view with which a person thus sets out on the spiritual path depends on his or her particular mental disposition. It is because individuals present such a variety of dispositions, with different degrees of ability and readiness to understand and accept certain views, that the Buddha and his spiritual heirs taught the different vehicles that are outlined in this text and described in order of the increasing subtlety and profundity of their corresponding views.”

“A Garland of Views presents both a concise commentary by the eighth-century Indian Buddhist master Padmasambhava on a chapter from the Guhyagarbha Tantra on the different Buddhist and non-Buddhist philosophical views, including the Great Perfection (Dzogchen)”

The Wholeness of Wealth – Guru Rinpoche day message by HE. Phakchok Rinpoche

6th April 2017 – The Wholeness of Wealth

Dear Friends Near and Far,

Hello! Happy Guru Rinpoche Day again.

Today, we are continuing our series on the Tukdrub Barché Künsel Twelve Manifestations. To start, I want to review what I taught in past messages. First, I talked about the practices of Long Life Amitayus including releasing life and being happy. Second, I talked about Avalokiteshvara. I spoke about how to be compassionate, release life, and remind you to be eco-friendly, animal-friendly, and to have good motivation. Then I talked about Guru Padmasambhava and the practices of having certainty, having trust, and especially making supplications.

Then we began with the Twelve Manifestations of Guru Rinpoche. The first manifestation is magnetizing: Gyalwey Dungdzin. I reminded you that developing self-confidence is very important. Then after that, I talked about the wisdom or intelligence of Mawey Senge. Important practices include offering candles, being focused, and not forgetting things. Try to notice things clearly and practice the breathing exercise I shared.

So today in order to magnetize things as Guru Rinpoche taught, you need wholeness of wealth. You may have intelligence, but if your wholeness of wealth is not there, then you cannot achieve things. Wholeness of wealth includes life, family, income, success, and whatever you wish to achieve. Here, Guru Padmasambhava manifests as Lama Norlha, who is Dzambala (the deity of wealth) and Guru Rinpoche inseparable.

Guru Rinpoche taught that to increase wealth, it’s very important to know how to make offerings and practice generosity. Start with small things so you learn how to give. If you are a Buddhist, then knowing how to do altar offerings as well as how to offer to others and give support is very important.

The second part that I want to mention to you is that contentment is very important in life. Without contentment, you are always poor. So it is very important to have contentment. But only having contentment is not enough. You need to do what you need to do, while always being aware of the right time. Taking the right opportunity is very important. Many of us forget to take the right opportunities. So listen to your gut and most importantly, when an opportunity comes, think decisively and take the opportunities. OK?

I am happy to announce that there are now subtitles in Polish and Romanian! This month’s video message also has subtitles in English, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Indonesian, Thai (coming soon), Vietnamese, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Russian, and Ukranian. Please click the settings wheel in the bottom right corner of the video to access these options.

Thank you very much for listening. I send many love and prayers to you all and I hope it helps you. Thank you. Bye bye.

Sarva Mangalam,

Shamatha and Vipashyana

“Shamatha” or Calm Abiding takes the meditator to the stage where emotional conflict and disturbing trains of thought are eliminated in a state of thoughtful concentration which is calm and peaceful. In this peaceful and calm condition nothing disturbs equanimity, whether coming from outside or inside the mind. It is a state untroubled by attachments and aversions.

At the same time the insight which is engendered by one pointed absorption allows clear vision of one’s own mind and the nature of things. This is called “Vipashyana” or Insight, which is a clear mind with an incisive insight into the nature of reality. Calmness and clarity allow the mind freedom to be in the here and now.

The other teaching programs are yet to be finalized. We will keep you posted and you can check at Mongkol Sri facebook page and also at www.mongkol.org

We are also raising fund for the payment of his flight ticket and other traveling expenses so if you would like to make a contribution please contact us here or call me at 081-9855564. The balance from the contribution will be directly donated to Lama Rinchen.

Here is a brief biography of Lama Rinchen:

Venerable Lama Rinchen Phuntsok is a skillfull teacher with a light and joyful manner. He is a scholar and meditation master of the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition. Born in Tibet, Lama Rinchen began receiving instruction in the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism at the age of six in Tsasum Chokhorling Monastery in Tibet. After he left Tibet in 1958, he studied at Young Lama’s Home School in Dalhousie, The Buddhist Monastic School in Rewalsar, Nyingmapa Lama’s College in Dehra-Dun, and Zongdog Palri Monastery in Kalimpong. Lama Rinchen graduated from Sanskrit University in Varanasi India where he completed advanced studies in Sutrayana Buddhist philosophy and scriptures, commentaries, logic, literature, history, and the major sciences of the Tibetan curriculum.

To complete his training in Vajrayana Nyingma School studies, he served as private secretary to the late His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche, supreme Head of the Nyingma order of Tibetan Buddhism for over fifteen years. During that time he received all the important empowerments, transmissions, essential instructions, the oral teaching of Nyingma Kama, and the Profound Rediscovered Teachings of Terma of the great Lotus Born Teacher, Guru Padmasambhava, the founder of Vajravana Buddhism. For many years Lama Rinchen was in charge of Zangdog Palri Monastery in India and also Urgyen Dongag, Choling Monastery in Kathmandu, Nepal. In 1980, His Holiness Dudjom Rinpoche asked him to come to the United States to teach in his New York center where Lama Rinchen was director and resident Lama for four years. Since then he has lectured widely throughout the United States and Europe at centers, colleges, and universities. Lama Rinchen visits his students every year and stays in St. Louis to give teachings and empowerments for several weeks during his U.S. tour. He also has students in New York, California, Colorado, New Mexico, etc., as he continues to spread the teachings of the Dudjom Lineage.
