Dependent Origination (प्रतीत्यसमुत्पाद pratītyasamutpāda)
Pratītyasamutpāda –
A name given by the historical Buddha to the arising of samsaric phenomena, variously rendered into English as “dependent origination”, “conditional genesis”, “dependent co-arising”, “inter dependent arising”.

“Commonly translated as dependent origination, or dependent arising, is a key principle in Buddhist teachings, which states that all dharmas (“phenomena”) arise in dependence upon other dharmas: “if this exists, that exists; if this ceases to exist, that also ceases to exist”.

The principle is expressed in the links of dependent origination (Pali: dvādasanidānāni, Sanskrit: dvādaśanidānāni) in Buddhism, a linear list of twelve elements from the Buddhist teachings which arise depending on the preceding link. Traditionally the list is interpreted as describing the conditional arising of rebirth in saṃsāra, and the resultant duḥkha (suffering, pain, unsatisfactoriness). ” (from wikipedia)

The Garland of Views
“In A Garland of Views, Padmasambhava compares the different vehicles on the basis of three criteria–view, meditation, and result. He devotes the final section of the text to a comparison using a fourth criterion–spiritual training and yogic discipline or conduct. Of all these, the view is of paramount importance. The way we look at the world decides the path we will take, whether spiritual or otherwise. When we see things erroneously, we create our own (and others’) suffering, and if we are to change our condition, we need to make radical changes to our view of reality. Once the view has been established, we can meditate on it, training our minds by means of spiritual practice and tuning our activities through appropriate conduct, until we finally achieve the result. The particular view with which a person thus sets out on the spiritual path depends on his or her particular mental disposition. It is because individuals present such a variety of dispositions, with different degrees of ability and readiness to understand and accept certain views, that the Buddha and his spiritual heirs taught the different vehicles that are outlined in this text and described in order of the increasing subtlety and profundity of their corresponding views.”

“A Garland of Views presents both a concise commentary by the eighth-century Indian Buddhist master Padmasambhava on a chapter from the Guhyagarbha Tantra on the different Buddhist and non-Buddhist philosophical views, including the Great Perfection (Dzogchen)”
(cr. A Garland of Views A Guide to View, Meditation, and Result in the Nine Vehicles)

It is with great joy, after three years of hard work, that we are announcing the completion of the Nepal volume in our forthcoming series of pilgrimage guides dedicated to Guru Rinpoche‘s life and deeds. To inaugurate this special event, we wish to invite you to join us this autumn as we follow in the footsteps of our precious Lotus-Born Guru, Padmasambhava, travelling to the holy sites of Nepal, where he taught, practiced and accomplished the Dharma.
This, our first official Guru Rinpoche pilgrimage, will be taking place in the auspicious Tibetan Year of the Bird – the same year in which, generations ago, the precious Jarung Kashor, otherwise known as the Boudhanath Stupa, was completed and consecrated.

Six Vajra Lines Accumulation

Kyabgön Phakchok Rinpoche has asked his sangha as well as all who are inspired to take part to accumulate 10,000,000 (ten million) recitations of the Six Vajra Verse supplication yearly starting from this Guru Rinpoche Day.

So far of you have accumulated 215,489 recitations of this prayer. To reach the target of 1,000,000 a year, we need to as a group increase our effort four fold! Please help to make this goal a reality.

This blessed supplication was revealed as a treasure by the great treasure revealer Chokgyur Dechen Lingpa in the 19th century. The first three lines are supplications to three forms of Guru Rinpoche, the fourth line is requesting Guru Rinpoche to grant blessings, the fifth line is requesting that all levels of obstacles may be removed, and the sixth line is requesting that all wishes may be spontaneously accomplished.

It is taught that there is no greater refuge in these times than Guru Padmasambhava. Make this supplication with a sense of weariness towards samsara, with love and compassion towards all sentient beings, and a heart full of genuine devotion. There is no doubt that the blessings will manifest in one’s mind stream when you supplicate in this way.

You may recite this supplication during your daily practice sessions as well as while going about your daily activities.

We have started a new counter which both tracks your personal contribution as well as the unified total. The page also has more information on the chant as well as links to teachings and commentaries on this profound supplication.

Gaining the Siddhis – Guru Rinpoche day message by HE. Phakchok Rinpoche

4th June 2017 – Gaining the Siddhis
Dear Friends Near and Far,

Happy Guru Rinpoche Day.

In this month’s video message, Phakchok Rinpoche introduces the manifestation Dzamling Gyenchog, who is Yangdak Heruka inseparable from Guru Padmasambhava.

In relation to this, Rinpoche contextualizes the importance of meditation as a daily practice.
Click here to view the video message
https://youtu.be/u2jSh9NF7lc
Today, I want to continue the Twelve Manifestations series. Now we are focusing on the manifestation named Dzamling Gyenchog, who is Yangdak Heruka inseparable from Guru Padmasambhava. Instead of Yangdak Heruka, sometimes they say Vishuddha Heruka, and sometimes they have different translations.

This particular practice of Dzamling Gyenchog that Guru Rinpoche taught is how to gain the siddhis, especially the higher siddhis. He also taught the great practice of phowa – the ejection of consciousness. This particular Guru Rinpoche practice is to achieve the great siddhis. Yangdak Heruka Dzamling Gyenchog is very profound.

Now, with that, I just want to say that all of us are very busy. We have many great qualities. We have self-confidence. We have a happy life. We are content. We do good things. We do compassionate acts. And we all have dignity. We all have many things and we know how to balance our life. But when we don’t have meditation, then we have nothing. This practice, Dzamling Gyenchog, explains how to gain the siddhis, especially through meditation.

Our meditation is important in life. How important is exercise? How important is it to have good food? How important is it to share with our friends when we are struggling with ourselves? How important is it to get advice from wise people? Actually, meditation is more important than all of that because meditation allows you to see your own self. Meditation makes your mind calmer. Meditation makes you improve yourself a little bit. And meditation makes you reduce your bad habits, negative emotions, and negative actions.

So how to do meditation? Meditation means bring focus. You can focus on an object. You can bring your mind to focus on your breath, on Guru Padmasambhava, or on compassion. All these three are actually called meditation.

To close, I want to tell you: yes it’s very difficult to meditate every day. So that’s why you need to find the experiences and benefits to encourage yourself. You need to find the faults and difficulties that come without meditating. You need to find inspiration especially through experiences. And consider sharing this with your friends to encourage them to try meditation as well.

Thank you very much all of you. Take care! Happy Guru Rinpoche Day.

I am happy to announce that there are now subtitles in Italian! The Italian and Japanese translators kindly added subtitles to all the videos of the manifestations series, which started in November. This month’s video message also has subtitles in French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Ukranian, and Vietnamese. There are currently some technical difficulties with the Chinese and Nepali language subtitles that should be addressed shortly. Please click the settings wheel in the bottom right corner of the video to access these options.

One of Kyabgön Phakchok Rinpoche’s recent practice requests for us from his birthday message was the accumulation of the Six Vajra Line Prayer.

Samye Dharma has created a counter so we can all upload our accumulations (log in required). Please log any of your accumulations starting from Phakchok Rinpoche’s birthday on May 23, and especially persevere until the Saga Dawa Duchen on June 9th. The counter will continue at least until the next Guru Rinpoche Day, July 3rd, so keep logging your accumulations until then.

Sarva Mangalam,
Kyabgön Phakchok Rinpoche
